Romanian Grand Prix 2008: VICTORY’S EUROPEAN TITLE SHOWDOWN

25/08/2008

Monday, 25 August: Mamaia-Constanta (Romania): Qatar 96 and Jotun will spearhead the fight-back to overhaul Victory’s lead in the World title race as Class 1 heads to the Black Sea resort of Mamaia-Constanta where teams will resume rivalries in the Romanian Grand Prix on Sunday, 31 August, round five of the Class 1 World Powerboat Championship and the fourth and final round of the Class 1 European Championship. And barring all disasters, it is Dubai’s Victory Team who look set to lift the European title.

Mohammed Al Marri and Nadir Bin Hendi, who lead the World Championship by 18 points and carry a ten-point advantage in the European standings, will line up in Victory 1 on Mamaia’s Lake Siutghiol for the 21-lap, 94.77Nm Romanian Grand Prix, as the clear favourites to lift a sixth European title for the team and the first silverware of the year after dominating the first half of the season, with Bin Hendi taking three wins from four starts, one with Arif Al Zafeen, out injured after round one, and two with Al Marri.

The immediate challenge to Victory 1 are team-mates, Abdullah Al Mehairbi and defending World and European Champion, Jean-Marc Sanchez, who have taken three podiums this season, out-gunning their team-mates last time out. But Victory 7’s throttleman, Sanchez, winner in Romania last year, knows that if he is to retain his title, they have to finish ahead of Victory 1 with several boats between them and an 11-point advantage – a tall order.

However, should either of the Victory outfits falter or hit trouble, several boats lie in wait with an outside tilt at the European crown. Jotun’s Inge Brigt Aarbakke and Jorn Tandberg, who ended Victory’s winning streak with a sensational win in the BMW Norwegian Grand Prix, are the most improving team this season and now the leading European challenger to the might of the Middle East teams, with Aarbakke and Tandberg looking for a second consecutive win.

For Qatar 96, also with three podiums to their credit, a second European title looks a distant prospect, but both Sheikh Hassan Bin Jabor Al-Thani and Steve Curtis know that to keep their World title aspirations alive, finishing ahead of both Victory outfits is the priority. Team-mates Abdullah Al-Sulaiti and Matteo Nicolini, currently lying in fourth slot in the overall title race in Qatar 95, will switch engines for Romania and the remainder of the season, opting to run Sterling V8 power-plants.

Foresti & Suardi’s Italian-Norwegian partnership of Giampaolo Montavoci and Kolbjorn Selmer head the battle for middle-order supremacy comfortably under-pinning their sixth place with consistency and reliability, finishing in the top six in all races so far this season.

For Roscioli Hotels Roma’s Domenico Cirilli, 2008 is seen as a year for developing new talent, and he and his new charge, Sergio Carrasco, have produced solid performances in their first season together, with the all-Spanish pairing taking points finishes from two of their three starts – missing out in Moscow after a harrowing moment when their steering broke – and looking for more points in Romania.

SeveneleveN’s crew of Nicola Giorgi and Giorgio Manuzzi are also looking at this season as a development year, with a new boat and driver-throttleman combination and more recently a new engine package. And with new engines for the second half of the season, Giorgi is confident that they can repeat the kind of performance that earned them a top six finish in the season opener.

After unveiling Class 1’s newest thoroughbred in Moscow, designed by Matteo Nicolini and built by Nicolini Offshore, Mohammed Al-Nassr and Luca Nicolini will give the boat only its third outing in Romania, looking for reliability to realise the promise and potential seen during multiple practice sessions and Pole Position outings.

Monday, 11 August: The Victory Team has confirmed it will appeal against the ruling taken by the WPPA following the Norwegian Grand Prix that cost the Championship leaders, Mohammed Al Marri and Nadir Bin Hendi, third place in the race. However, team manager, Gianfranco Venturelli, was remaining tight-lipped about their reasons. “We will use the rulebook and the footage but at the moment I can not enter into details.”

The appeal will be heard before the Romanian Grand Prix in Constanta, round five of the World Championship and the fourth and final round of the European Championship, at the end of this month (29-31 August), where both Victory outfits will be battling it out for the European title.

QATAR TEAM PROTEST YELLOW CARD

Friday, 18 July, ARENDAL (Norway): The Qatar Team has lodged a protest against the yellow card issued to Qatar 96 pilots, Sheikh Hassan bin Jabor Al-Thani and Steve Curtis, by the WPPA Race Committee following the Russian Grand Prix in Moscow.

WPPA spokesperson Rory Power said, "There was no protest at the time; but normal procedure is for any incident to be investigated by the race committee to look at the circumstances." The yellow card – given for the incident between Qatar 96 and Victory 7 on the first lap that resulted in both boats sustaining considerable damage – was issued five days after the event, citing race rule 29.08, Right of Way Overtaking/Passing in a turn.

Qatar Team Manager, Matteo Nicolini, is unimpressed with the decision taken by the WPPA Officials and has rejected, out-of-hand, the yellow card. "The penalty was not issued in the right time and over the five day limit – so we simply reject the decision and the card," adding, "I do not understand the reason for the decision. The rule is clear. If two boats are going for the turn, the outside boat must give way. Qatar 96 was on the inside. There is a rule that can be applied, if a crew is deemed to have acted in an unsafe manner or against the spirit of the sport.

"The Qatar Team always acts - without question – inside all the rules whether safety or technical."

TORRENTIAL DOWNPOURS AND POOR VISIBILTY FORCES ORGANISERS TO CANCEL EDOX POLE POSITION

Saturday, 19 July, ARENDAL (Norway): Torrential downpours and poor visibility forced race officials to cancel today’s Edox Pole Position, announcing that the times set by the teams in tomorrow’s one hour morning practice session will determine the line-up for the 17-lap, 96.70Nm BMW Norwegian Grand Prix.

Although over half of the ten-strong fleet managed to tackle the 5.62Nm circuit, several teams failed to set qualifying times due to heavy rain storms which reduced visibility, forcing the organisers to red-flag the session twice before eventually abandoning it.

Despite the fact that none of the times that were posted during the session counted, it was Team Qatar’s Sheikh Hassan bin Jabor Al Thani and Steve Curtis who went quickest, setting the best time of the day covering the 5.62Nm lap in 3m19.92s, over three seconds quicker than World Championship leaders, Victory 1’s Mohammed Al Marri and Nadir Bin Hendi. There was also a good showing by home favourites, Inge Brigt Aarbakke and Jorn Tandberg in Jotun, who have impressed in both practice sessions, setting the third quickest time of 3m 26.07s.

While nothing can be gleamed from the aborted qualifying session, it was a positive response by Qatar 96 crew Sheikh Hassan and Curtis, who earlier in the day won their appeal against the ‘yellow card’ issued as a result of a collision with Victory 7 in the Russian Grand Prix in Moscow.

The season may not be at the ‘win-or-bust’ stage yet, but Sheikh Hassan and Curtis know that they need to finish ahead of Al Marri and Bin Hendi and start to reduce the point’s gap, with the Dubai duo currently enjoying a 29-point advantage over their Qatari rivals who are down the Championship order in fourth place.

Among those unable to get a clean run in qualifying were Victory 7 crew Abdullah Al Mehairbi and reigning World and European Champion, throttleman Jean-Marc Sanchez, winner of the Norwegian Grand Prix twelve months ago.

For the second race in a row due to the narrowness of the course, the Grand Prix start will see teams lining-up in two rows – five boats in each, with Victory 1 looking to make it four wins from four starts and take the European Championship.
